Morristown Memorial Hospital Staff Parking Garage
Birdsall Services Group, Cranford, NJ
As part of an overall campus expansion plan, Morristown Memorial Hospital sought to construct a new 1,100 car parking facility for its staff. The garage was to be sited in the northwest corner of the property adjacent to the interstate, but closer to the center of the town. The neighbors and town had particular concerns as to the impact of such a large structure on the streetscape and the local neighborhood. With sensitivity to their concerns, BUCKL Architects developed an exterior design which sought to: (1) break down the overall mass of the building; (2) mask its true purpose; and (3) reflect the federal style detailing that is common to the town. This was accomplished through the development of a precast concrete façade that incorporates a variety of materials and finishes. Precast concrete panels include both concrete and thin brick finishes and vary in thickness to provide additional definition and depth. Large expanses of glass window wall accent the stair towers and provide additional light and security to the staff. The use of mock windows at the repeating façade, create the sense of the streetscape and minimize the impact of the large structure. Metal louvers used throughout provide additional fine detailing which helps to break down the mass of the building while hiding the structure beyond.
This five level parking structure includes a galvanized steel frame with precast concrete Filigree deck panels with a reinforced cast-in-place concrete deck. The original design included the structural capacity to expand the five story structure by two levels in the future. The additional two floor expansion is now under construction and is scheduled to be completed by years end.
